Matt Hellige shot in arm on way to cross-country practice

CEDAR RAPIDS - A 2020 graduate of Holy Trinity was shot in the forearm Thursday while running to cross country practice at Mt. Mercy University in Cedar Rapids.

According  to police reports Matt Hellige, 21, was taken to an area hospital after being shot near the intersection of Elmhurst Drive at Hazel Drive Northeast.

Hellige's injuries were considered non-life threatening.

His father John Hellige said his son is doing well and was hoping to run in Saturday's cross country event.

"It went clean through his right forearm. He's doing good. He's a tough kid and wants to run on Saturday at the conference meet," Hellige wrote in a text to Pen City Current at about 7:15 p.m. Thursday night,.

A home security video in the area captured video that was run on  KCRG of more than 12 shots being fired that struck several homes and buildings in addition to Hellige.

According to KCRG's report, police responded the scene at about 4 p.m. Thursday. The university went into a lockdown, but that has since been lifted and Cedar Rapids police say there is no ongoing threat.
