ISP claims more K9 honors

Four member team takes first place at event

FORT MADISON - The Iowa DOC K9 Department certifies through the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA) each year.   This year’s certification was held in Des Moines, Iowa August 28th – 30th 2022.  More than 38 teams competed in five categories: Obedience, article search, suspect search, agility, and apprehension.  

The Iowa State Penitentiary team consisted of Sergeants Steve Dill, Dustin Yager, and Mike Barnes.  Jason Gibson also participated with K9 Hugo from Clarinda Correctional Facility.

This will be the fourth year in a row that the team won the First Place Trophy.  In addition, Sgt. Gibson received First Place Overall, Sgt. Yager received First Place in Obedience and Sgt. Barnes received First Place Agility and Second Place Suspect Search.   

The Team trains regularly with their K9’s in each of these areas to ensure they are ready for their day-to-day work in the facility.
