Sandoval goes the distance for Central Lee

WEST BURLINGTON – Central Lee knocked off West Burlington Thursday night on the road at Barb Carter Field in West Burlington.
Jaci Hawk led the Hawks going 3-5 at the plate with a run scored. Alix Congdon had a double and 3 RBI. Shanna Buford and Carlee Pezley both had two hits for Central Lee.
The Hawks rallied from a 3-0 deficit after the Falcons opened the bottom of the first inning with three runs when the first nine hitters got to the plate off Hawks starter Kenna Sandoval.
The freshman then settled in and held the Falcons scoreless over the next four innings not allowing a single hit.
The Hawks got on the board in the top of the third with a couple runs with Congdon and Hawk both scoring.
The would tie things up in the top of the fifth when Sandoval drew a one-out walk and Shanna Buford doubled to left bringing in Sandoval before Lauren Summers got out of the inning. The Hawks added a run in the top of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead, but West Burlington responded with two more in the bottom of the frame highlighted by Madelynn Thomas’ lead-off home run. Anna Engberg reached on a single and came around to score on fielder’s choice double play by the Hawks. The run gave the Falcons a 5-4 lead going into the final inning.
Central Lee put up 4 runs in the top of the half to give Sandoval some breathing room.
Marie Young, Bailey Schwartz, Abby Simmons and Carlee Pezley all reached with one out and came around to score with Alex Congdon driving in two with a single to right. Hawk followed with a single scoring two more before Sandoval flied out to end the inning.
Sandoval then gave up just a single in the seventh before Lauren Krieger popped out in the infield to end the game and give the Hawks their 5th win of the year at 5-4. West Burlington falls to 6-2.
Central Lee is off until Tuesday when they take on Danville at home at 5 p.m.
