GALESBURG – The hot-footed Fort Madison cross-country teams made a trip across state lines Saturday for a meet at the loaded Silver Streak Invitational at Lake Storey Park.
Junior Avery Rump, who has set the pace for the Hounds the past two years, finished ninth in the 5k run with a 19:24.50. Rump, a state qualifier from 2023, has improved the last two meets and is looking to get close to the 18:54 time that earned her a 4th-place finish in Fort Dodge last season.
Junior McKayla Schinstock marked a personal best 20:16.30 for 13th overall and second for the Lady Hounds. Junior Addison Rump finished 16th at 20:22.50 followed by Ellie Hellman at 20:32.50 (17th). Jordyn Marshall wrapped up the top five for Fort Madison with a 20:47.40 (22th) to give the Lady Hounds 76 points and a 2nd place finish in the 13-team field. Ellie Huebner ran at 23:05.8 (43nd).
Geneseo’s Brooklyn Smith ran an 18:26.30, which is 12.3 seconds faster than the top Class 3A Iowa girl in 2023.
“This was a nice run considering we just raced 36 hours ago,” said Head Coach Brian Mendez.
“Avery is back to lighting it up. Her time was fantastic and I think she’s getting back to normal. McKayla Schinstock was on today. She’s got abilities we haven’t seen due to some shin splints the last couple seasons. If she continues to run like this, the sky is the limit for the team. To be honest, all the girls ran solid races today.”
In the boys run, the Bloodhounds captured seventh pack running again, this time with junior Riley Tripp coming in first for Fort Madison with a 17:37.40, which was a personal best for him.
Senior Jacob Shottenkirk was right behind in 28th with a 17:43.60.  Payton Lambert finished at 30 with a time of 17:46.90, followed by Hunter Wiegand who rotated into the top five putting up a sub-18 minute 17:54.80 (34th). Calvin Johnson set a personal best 18:34.00 to round out the scoring runners for Fort Madison at 49th.
Jacob Walker and Noah Schinstock also ran finishing at 18:51.10 (56th) and 18:55.60 (57th) respectively.
“Riley finishing first today goes back to my pre-season notes,” Mendez said. “It really could rotate each race. Riley felt good about today’s race. He’s had a time with his spikes as of late and was able to get it figured out today.
“Nolan Guzman and Mason McLey stayed back today. They needed some rest. Both have some soreness and it wasn’t worth making it worse. We have two very capable freshmen in Noah Schinstock and Jacob Walker. They filled in just fine today.”
The harriers run Thursday at Waterworks Park in Fairfield at 5:20 p.m.
