DONNELLSON - A good one-two punch is a powerful weapon in a fight.

Central Lee's one-two punch of seniors Mya Lampe and Makayla Morrison took the fight out of New London early as the Hawks rolled to a 72-35 SEI Superconference win Friday in Donnellson.

Morrison and Lampe combined for 12 three-pointers, eight from Lampe, all of her scoring, as the Hawks moved to 4-5 in the conference and 6-7 overall.

New London scored the first bucket of the night on a put back from sophomore Morgan Jones, then it was all Central Lee as they raced out to a 16-4 advantage and a 24-11 first quarter lead.

Morrison scored 17 points in the first quarter, including three of her four 3-balls.

Head Coach Taylor Hickey said the offensive juggernaut was just what the coach was hoping for.

"It's huge. That was a big offensive momentum changer for us. The last couple games have been pretty close," she said.

"We've been working on our offense in practice, but lately we've been all defense, so this was good to have an offensive mindset tonight."

As New London moved their defense to contain Morrison not only in transition but moving around the perimeter in the half court, Lampe stepped up and hit two quick threes to open the second quarter.

The Tigers got a little run of their own with about 5 minutes left in the first half with Jones scoring to start a 6-2 run. Sophomore Mylee Miller would convert two back-to-back buckets, one on a nice interior bounce pass assist from Natalie Burden under the basket.

Jones would score again after the Hawks failed on two straight possessions, and Burden scored in transtion to cut the lead to 11 at 32-21.

Central Lee would answer with an 7-0 lead to end the first half. Morrison would get 21 of her 24 points in the first half. Lampe had four 3-pointers for 12.

Lampe would put up three more 3s in the third quarter as Central Lee stretched the lead to 29 at the end of the third and were comfortably on their way to the win in the fourth.

Hickey pulled Morrison and Lampe with almost six minutes left in the first half.

The Hawks were without freshman Kenna Sandoval who's the teams top rebounder with 52 on the year. Sandoval was taken from Tuesday's game in an ambulance after going down with a neck injury at Mediapolis. Fortunately Sandoval didn't suffer any serious injury and was out as a precaution Friday.

"Before the game there was two keys because Kenna couldn't play. She's a huge presence and we had to rebound. We had to rebound, and we had to make our layups. Lots of times we get to the rim, but we look for a bail out and not a finish," Hickey said.

Hickey sad she was very impressed with sophomore Maddie McGlasson who seemed very comfortable with the ball under the basket. McGlasson finished with 10 points on the night, all in the second half.

"She said she was nervous, but she went in there and did awesome. She works that high post and turns. I told her to look for her own shot and she did that," Hickey said.

Central Lee is off until they travel to Burlington to take on No. 11 Burlington Notre Dame (11-4, 8-1) on Tuesday.
