One dead, several injured in Macomb shooting

Off-campus incident at WIU under investigation

MACOMB - One person is dead and several others have been injured as a result of a shooting incident in Macomb early Saturday morning.

According to a release from Macomb Interim Police Chief Jeff Harner, the incident occurred at 1:55 a.m. off campus at Western Illinois University in the 500 block of North Johnson Street.

Multiple people were wounded when shooting a broke out at a house party on the block. The injured were transported to McDonough District Hospital and one person was pronounced dead  at the  scene.

No identities have yet been revealed.

The hospital implemented lockdown procedures due to the nature of the incident. Several of the injured were triaged and then sent to area hospitals.

The university has cancelled all athletic events for the weekend, according to university officials.

Due to the circumstances involving an off-campus incident in Macomb overnight, Director of Athletics Paul A. Bubb has announced out of respect for the victims and their families, all Leatherneck athletic activities for Saturday, March 25 and Sunday, March 26 have been postponed, including a soccer match at Southeastern Community College today.

University offiicials will meet to discuss when events will resume.

Law enforcement officials are asking anyone with potential video evidence to contact CrimeStoppers at 309-836-3222 anonymously. Video evidence can also be emailed to citizenconcerns@macombpolice.com.

The investigation is ongoing and a brefing is scheduled for 1 p.m. today at Macomb City Hall.

Macomb Police, McDonough County Sheriff's Department, Illinois State Police, Western Illinois University Public Safety, Hancock County Sheriff's Department, Lifeguard Ambulance, and Galesburg Area EMS Ambulance all assisted at the scene.
