Police investigating alleged sexual abuse, prostitution

Case involving allegations around a Fort Madison minor began in September

FORT MADISON - Fort Madison police have arrested a 50-year-old  man in connection with an investigation into a sexual abuse case involving a local juvenile.

Charles Dean Meyer, of Fort Madison was arrested on Aug. 18 in connection with the incident and is being charged with the purchase/possession of dipictions of a minor in a sex act-first offense, prostitution, and 3rd-degree sexual abuse of a child. Meyer is currently being held at the Lee County Jail on a $50,000 cash bond.

According to a criminal complaint filed in North Lee County Court on Wednesday, five photographs were pulled from Meyer's phone, four of which allegedly show photos of the juvenile that are sexually explicit in nature. That complaint was the basis of the first charge.

Another criminal complaint filed on Aug. 19 outline the basis of the prostitution and 3rd-degree sexual abuse of a child charges.

That complaint indicates the Fort Madison Police Department and Iowa Dept. of Human Services began an investigation of the same juvenile for the alleged sexual encounters between September and October where cash was allegedly exchanged between the juvenile and Meyer on one occassion.

Police have issued six search warrants since September, including four in the last 10 days on property owned by Meyer, and have discovered multiple instances of electronic sexual misconduct.

Fort Madison Police Chief Mark Rohloff said at this point in the investigation everyone has been fully cooperative and the incident remains under investigation. The State Department of Criminal Investigation has also been called into assist with the case.

Meyer is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
