Dear Editor:
I want to start this by saying that I have been a supporter of Stacy Weber for sheriff. I have known Sheriff Weber for a few years, but I've gotten to know him better since being elected to the board of supervisors. I have found him to be a professional dedicated to his job and quite frankly to all people. I am also a lifelong Republican and as such I have tried to look for the positive aspects with regard to Elliot Vandenberg as it was possible that I might have to work with him in the future. At this point, I will just say I pray God that never has to happen.
It's true that I fix furnaces for a living, and I spend most of my time in dark basements with nobody around except the cat litter box. I should mention that I have an MBA, because evidently based on the recent candidate forum, that is the most important thing(sarcasm intended).
Recently, we have seen convincing evidence, including a first hand, social media post that Elliott Vandenberg physically laid hands upon a county employee, wearing the uniform of a county employee at the candidate forum on Tuesday last.
Let's get this straight, someone who wants to be the chief law-enforcement officer of the county committed what could arguably called assault on a county employee in a public arena.
I have always maintained that masculinity is a positive trait. A real man protects his family, his country and any innocent person around him. I was also taught that no man lays his hands upon a woman unless of of course, in the execution of his sworn duty.
If Elliott Vandenberg would do this to someone who might someday be his employee in a public arena, what else is he capable of? Is he someone that we should even consider putting in the place that he seeks? For me that's a hard no and I think it should be the same for any free thinking reasonable person.
I've seen some former deputies write some scathing letters to the editor attack attacking sheriff, Weber, and supporting candidate Vandenberg. So maybe we should look at these letters and these deputies. I'm not speaking out of school here. I did a freedom of information request without the knowledge of the county sheriff just like you could do to get this information. One of these deputies left their job after handcuffing a 70+-year-old woman at a cemetery who was there to visit a gravesite and threatening her 90+ year-old mother with arrest . Of course there were circumstances around this, but is this really the best job of de-escalation that you can do. The other deputy that wrote a letter was terminated for cause. I'll just say this if you love dogs this might not be the guy you look to for guidance.
Candidate Vandenberg has proven by his public conduct, which could possibly put some people in handcuffs that he's not capable of carrying those handcuffs and should immediately drop out of this race.
