Rump wins X-Country conference meet

Hounds place five on all-conference teams

FAIRFIELD - Avery Rump and Washington's Iris Dahl have run 1-2 at 5Ks across southeast Iowa this year in girls high school cross country action.

That trend continued as the Fort Madison freshman harrier captured the conference title at Fairfield's Waterworks Park Thursday evening.

Rump ran a 19:56.05, the only girl in the field to break the 20-minute mark on her way to the Southeast Conference title. Rump joins her twin sister Addison on the girls All-Conference squad. Addison finished 5th overall with a 21:01.23.

Dahl finished 16 seconds behind Rump for second place at 20:12.13. Washington put five girls on the all-conference squad with all the Demon scoring runners finishing in the top 10.

Fort Madison finished third as a team with 72 points. Washington won the event with 26 points. Fairfield was second with 57 points.

"It’s so hard to put in words how well we ran tonight and what kind of effort our kids have given this season.," head coach Brian Mendez said.
"We are so proud of them all. Thank you to all of our athletes and to our awesome parents for their support this season. 
 
The boys squad took second place and gave perennial powerhouse Washington a run for their money with only three points separating the two. Washington finished with 43 points, while the Bloodhounds had 46.
 
This time out Riley Tripp edged out Jacob Shottenkirk for the top Bloodhound runner. Tripp ran a 17:50 flat, while Shottenkirk was right behind on the final sprint at 17:50.58 for 5th and 6th place. Mason McLey rounded out the top 10 with a 17:59.94. All three runners were named to the SEC all-conference squad.
 
The other two scoring runners for the boys squad were Nolan Guzman at 18:07.58 (12th) and  John Cottrell, who almost finished in a dead heat with Guzman 18:07.59 (13th).
 
Other top runners for Fort Madison were Peyton Lambert (16th), Castille Johnstun (26th), Cameron Shutwell (30th), Jackson Haessig (40th), Benjamin Thele (52nd), Jake Haessig (56th),  Calvin Johnson ((58th), and Logan Pomberg (72nd).
 
For the girls other top scoring runners Hadley Wolfe finished 16th overall with a 22:18.78, and Allison Lamb took 24th overall with a 22:48.88. Alexa Walz rounded out the scoring for the Lady Hounds with a 23:07.26 (27th).
 
Other runners for the Fort Madison girls were Jordyn Burch (43rd), Emma Berry (49th), Emma Kern (52nd), and Lillian Gelsthorpe (55th).
 
State qualifying takes place on Oct. 19 in the 13-team Washington Class 3A assignment beginning at 4 p.m. The State meet at Kennedy Park in Fort Dodge for Class 3A is set for Oct. 29 with girls at 10:30 a.m. and boys at 11:15 a.m.
 
CLASS 1A
Holy Trinity Catholic boys ran in the Southeast Iowa Superconference meet last week.
The Crusaders fielded just four runners so they couldn't qualify as a team. But the four runners all ran personal bests led by Sheldon Kruse, who finished 27th at 19:33. Maddox Rung ran a 19:42 for 29th for second best for the Crusaders.
Tate Green finished 34th at 19:57, and Layne Run ran at 21:55 for 59th overall.
Qualifying for the Crusaders will take place at Iowa City Regina, Oct. 20.
