MONTROSE - Lee County Conservation is excited to announce that the Fort Madison Southeast Iowa Regional Riverboat Commission (SIRRC) has awarded a grant to the Outdoor Classroom Project at Heron Bend Conservation Area. This grant completes the funding for the project, which has already broken ground and is expected to be ready for use in 2025.
The SIRRC grant will be utilized to purchase picnic tables, benches, and other small amenities, ensuring that the outdoor space is fully equipped for educational and community activities. The outdoor classroom is a vital initiative to provide hands-on environmental education for local schools, families, and nature enthusiasts, fostering a deeper connection to the natural world.
"We are deeply appreciative of the support from SIRRC," said Heather Huebner, Director of Lee County Conservation. "Their contribution is the final step in bringing this project to life, and we are excited to see the positive impact it will have on our community."
In addition to thanking SIRRC, Lee County Conservation again extends its gratitude to the project’s other generous sponsors, including Lee County Quail Forever, Lee County Youth Services, Lee County Charitable Fund, Walmart Foundation, Freeport-McMoRan Fund, Mohrfeld Construction, and the many individual donors.
Once completed, the outdoor classroom will serve as a dynamic learning environment, promoting environmental stewardship and outdoor education for future generations.
