IOWA CITY - Two Holy Trinity Catholic students were honored last month by the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for outstanding art submissions.
HTC sophomore Claire Graham and her sister Lucy, a 7th grader at HTC, were both honored at the University of Iowa's Memorial Union by the Belin-Blank program at a regional ceremony held March 10. Claire received a Gold Key and Lucy received a Silver Key.
Gold Key works are judged nationally by a panel of creative-industry experts to receive National Medals, including Gold, Silver and American Visions & Voices, Portfolio Silver and Gold Medals.
HTC instructor Allison Arevalo said the gold key works are the very best of the works submitted at the local level and are automatically considered for national recognition. Silver Key projects are stand out projects that demonstrate exceptional ability.
In 2016, Claire received an honorable mention, and in 2017 Claire received two silver keys and Lucy received an honorable mention and a silver key.
Judges look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. Teens in grades 7-12 apply in 29 categories of art and writing and in 2017 more than 330,000 works were submitted to the Scholastic Awards.
The Belin-Blank Center recognizes talent in all areas and serves as the Iowa and Midwest Affiliate for the awards program.
