FORT MADISON – A woman killed in a tragic crash in Washington County on Sunday has ties to the Fort Madison community, and efforts are underway locally to help raise funds to assist her family.
Olivia Alvarez, 27, of Cedar Rapids, was killed Sunday when a woman eluding law enforcement entered her lane of traffic striking her vehicle head on.
According to Iowa State Patrol reports, life-saving measures were conducted on the scene, but Alvarez succumbed to her injuries.
The woman who struck Alvarez’s vehicle was being pursued by multiple agencies after she reportedly was firing shots from her vehicle near Muscatine at about 3:15 p.m. Sunday. She eluded officers and was chased out of the city. The woman was later identified as Brittany Dale Miles, 36, of Cedar Rapids.
A report in the Des Moines Register indicated Miles had previous encounters with law enforcement.
Miles headed southbound in northbound lanes on Hwy. 218 in Washington County near mile marker 78 at about 3:51 p.m. where she struck Alvarez’s vehicle killing them both.

“Those two had been together for about a year and they had just bought a house and a car. She had her own management job. She was only 27 years old.”
Miles was driving a 2021 Nissan Rouge and Alvarez was driving a 2017 Ford Explorer when the collision occurred.
Assisting at the scene were Iowa State Patrol, Department of Natural Resources, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Washington County EMS, Washington County Medical Examiner, Riverside Fire/EMS, Ainsworth Fire/EMS, Louisa County Sheriff’s Office, and Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office.
