WASHINGTON – The Fort Madison Bloodhounds split a doubleheader with Washington Monday night in Washington.
The Hounds experienced an offensive juggernaut in the second game with a 12-1 win to offset an 11-1 loss in the opener.
Fort Madison racked up 15 hits in the nightcap and held the Demons to just four. Washington also committed five errors in the loss.
Owen Huffman went four innings in the win allowing just one hit and no runs while fanning five and walking three. Caden Rehm came on in the fifth inning and surrendered three hits and a run with one strike out.
Karson Dixon had two doubles and an RBI while scoring twice. Stefan Berlett and Owen Weisinger each had three hits and an RBI. Fort Madison put up two runs in the first inning and then added four more in the second when Huffman singled and two runs scored on a throwing error at third all with two outs. Reece Huey followed with a single to drive in Huffman, and Berlett singled to score Huey.
The Hounds added two more runs in each of the third, fifth and six innings to set the 10-run rule in the sixth.
In the opener, Fort Madison scored a run in the top of the first when Huffman scored on a passed pall, but that was all the production they would get. Washington held Fort Madison to just four hits. The Hounds then gave up six runs in the fifth inning for an 11-1 score and a 10-run mercy rule. Huffman, Huey, Berlett, and Nolan Lamb had the hits for the Hounds who move to 4-10 on the season in Southeast Conference play and 9-18 overall. They host Mt. Pleasant in a single game 7 p.m. start on Thursday, July 2 before the holiday weekend.
Lady Hounds drop three
WASHINGTON – The Fort Madison girls dropped a doubleheader at Washington Monday night and then fell 10-1 to Newton Tuesday at the University of Iowa.
On Monday the Lady Hounds dropped the first game 3-1 and then had the bases loaded in the top of the 7th down by a run. Nallie Menke, Signe Nelson, and Jordyn Marshall were all on base after the Bloodhounds had climbed back to within one run at 9-8, a strike out and lineout to third ended the threat.
Menke and Ava Fuget each had two hits. Fuget drove in three runs and scored another in five plate appearances. Emma Snaadt suffered the loss going all seven innings giving up 10 hits and allowing five earned runs.
The opener was more a pitcher’s dual with the Demons winning 3-1. Fort Madison had four hits to Washington’s five as Lucia Darnell kept Washington in check with seven strikeouts and just one walk. Menke had another two hit game. Marshall and Nelson had the other hits in the loss.
In Tuesday’s game, Newton held Fort Madison to just five hits again, but the Hounds suffered through seven errors in the game. Of the Cardinals 10 runs only two were earned as Snaadt allowed just four hits but four runs. Darnell came in allowed just five hits, but six runs came around to score and none of them were earned.
Menke, Fuget, Darnell, Snaadt, and Kenadi Allen each had hits for Fort Madison.
Fort Madison falls to 5-8 in Southeast play and 9-18 overall. They host Mt. Pleasant in a single 7 p.m. game Thursday at Baxter Sports Complex.
