Bohnenkamp honored by basketball writers

FORT MADISON Sports writer John Bohnenkamp, who covers southeast Iowa sports for the Pen City Current, was honored on Tuesday in the United States Basketball Writers Association best writing contest.
Bohnenkamp, a FMHS alumnus, writing for his website IowaCollegeHoops.com, finished fourth in the game story category for his story on Iowa’s loss to Illinois in the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament last season, a game that turned out to be Fran McCaffery’s final game as coach of the Hawkeyes.
It is the eighth USBWA honor for Bohnenkamp, a Fort Madison native who just finished his 33rd season covering college basketball at Iowa and Western Illinois University.
Bohnenkamp was one of two Iowa writers honored in the contest. Scott Dochterman of The Athletic finished fifth in the column writing category.
