ANAMOSA – Central Lee junior Aubree Bunnell broke her own school record and the 18th-ranked Lady Hawks took fifth place with 135 points at a loaded Anamosa Cross Country Invitational on Saturday.
The event featured seven ranked girls teams
Bunnell placed eighth with a 20:26.2 which broke her school record set just four days earlier. Drake Newton captured fourth place in the boys' run, helping the Hawk boys to an 8th-place finish with 190 points.
Fort Madison’s boys were sixth with 162 points and the Lady Hounds didn’t field enough for a team score.
For the Lady Hawks, freshman Savanna Overton was second best on the team with a  21:50.1 good enough for 24th place overall and 22nd in team scoring. Addalie Day, another freshman on the much improved Central Lee girls' team, ran a 22:03.7 for 29th overall and 28th in team scoring. The other two scoring runners were Adella Adkins, yet another freshman, running 37th overall and 33rd in team scoring, and freshman McKenna Fransk who ran a 23:48.1 for 57th overall and 45th in team scoring.
That Hawks’ team, if you're keeping track - and you should be, was led Saturday by a junior state qualifier from 2025 in Bunnell, and four freshmen runners, and they are ranked 18th in the state in Class 2A. Stay tuned.
For the boys, Newton, who said last week his goal was to break a 17-minute run, ran a 17:00.7 as a freshman for fourth place overall and in team scoring to lead the boys. Caden Crozier was second in for the Hawks with an 18:42.3 good for 34th in team scoring and 35th overall. The other scoring runners for Central Lee were Caedon Newton 18:54.7 (39th/41st), Henry Robbins 19:43.4 (55th/61st), and Austin Fogarty at 20:01.2 (58th/65th).
For the Bloodhound boys' Hunter Weigand extended his strong senior year with a 17:14.4, good enough for sixth overall and sixth in team scoring. Oliver Wiese was 29th overall and 29th in team scoring with an 18:18.3, Jacob Walker was 36th overall and 35th in team scoring with an 18:44.4, Colton Tripp  (48/44) came in at 19:10.4, and Zach Hermes (50/47) with a 19:17.5.
For the Lady Hounds', freshman 8th grader Kaitlyn Marshall ran a 21:43.3 good enough for 23rd overall. Again, the Lady Hounds only had four runners and didn’t factor into team scoring. Eloise Lamb ran a 22:41.9 for 38th place and Ellie Hellman ran a 25:04.0 for 70th place overall. Leah Gelsthorpe was the fourth Fort Madison girl coming in at 29:14.0 for 94th.
