Central Lee boys win 1A/2A title at MP

Drake Newton 4th overall; Hunter Wiegand paces Hounds to 4th place finish

MT. PLEASANT – Drake Newton is continuing a very strong freshman cross country season for Central Lee.
The Hawk ran a 17:04.55 at Mt. Pleasant to take 3rd place just 4.5 seconds behind Mediapolis’ Will Schmidgall and 24 seconds off the pace of Mid-Prairie speedster Max Schwartzentruber in the 1A/2A High School Division Tuesday evening.
Newton finished 4th overall and his time led the Hawks to the 1A/2A title with 50 points. Fort Madison was 4th in the 3A/4A division with 75 points and Keokuk was fifth with 106 points.
In the girls race, Central Lee’s Lady Hawks were runner-up with 69 points behind Mid-Prairie (30). The Fort Madison girls were also runners-up in 3A/4A with 55 points behind Fairfield’s 48.
Central Lee’s Caden Crozier was 7th in team scoring with an 18:43.27, while Caedon Newton was 10th at 19:01.05. Other scoring runners for the Hawk boys included Orion St. Clair (13th) at 19:17.47 and Kaidin Humes who finished with a 19:29.80, after competing in the Broken Anvil Backyard Ultra in West Point over the weekend.
For the Fort Madison boys, Hunter Wiegand ran a 17:09.24 good enough for second behind Washington’s Parker Tschantz at 16:40.21. The Hounds didn’t have another scoring runner until Jacob Walker’s 15th place finish at 18:32.09. Fort Madison had a pack there with Oliver Wiese at 16th (18:39.01) and Colton Tripp (17th) right behind at 18:40.03. Zack Hermes rounded out the Bloodhound scoring boys at 25th with a 19:30.89.
For the Lady Hawks, Aubree Bunnell took 5th in team scoring with a 20:27.37 to lead Central Lee. The other scoring runners included Savannah Overton (13th) at 21:52.47. Addalie Daly and Macy Anderson ran tandem with Daly finishing at 22:39.56 (15th) and Anderson at 22:40.76 (16th). Mckenna Fransk wrapped up the scoring runners with a 22:53.38 (20th).

Fort Madison was paced by Kaitlin Marshall’s 20:20.27 which was 2nd in the 3A/4A divison and 8th overall in the girls run. Jordyn Marshall was 7th in 3A/4A with a 21:58.40. The other scoring runners for the Lady Hounds included Eloise Lamb (11th) 22:29.20, Addy Pezley (12th) 22:33.89, and Ellie Hellman (23rd) at 23:55.91.

Lady Hounds take down Keokuk 3-1
KEOKUK – The Fort Madison Lady Hounds volleyball team took three of four from the Keokuk Chiefs Tuesday night in Keokuk. The Hounds won 25-18, 21-25, 25-7 and 25-15 in the Southeast Conference matchup.
Natalee Nelson led the Hounds with 12 kills and three blocks. Kylie Lumino was a perfect 33-33 serving with six aces and she had 27 digs from the back rotation. Lyla Smith had five kills and 18 digs. Alaina Schwerin was 14-15 serving with two aces and eight kills.
The Hounds are 2-2 in conference play and 10-10 overall. They are off until Monday when they travel to Illinois to take on Warsaw and then resume conference play on Tuesday when they host Washington in the Hound Dome.
