DONNELLSON – Central Lee junior Kenna Sandoval had a breakout night in the Lady Hawks' win over Columbus Monday at home.
Sandoval scored 21 points and a whopping 17 rebounds as Central Lee downed the Wildcats 54-44 in a non-divisional SEI Superconference game. Sandoval did that work while playing the final minutes with four fouls. Lizzy Mason had a dozen points for Central Lee.
The Hawks held a slim 16-13 advantage after the first quarter and then trailed by one at the end of the first half. The two squads battled back and forth through the third period with the Hawks holding a four-point 40-36 advantage going into the final period.
Then the defense kicked in and the Hawks held Columbus to eight fourth-quarter points while pushing a 9-0 run that sported them a 49-40 lead with two minutes left in the game.
Mason had 11 boards, three assists, and three steals.
Macy Doty had eight points and Taylor Jones had 7.
The Hawks (1-1, 2-2) host Danville Friday night in a girl/boy varsity double header and then travel to (2-0) Centerville on Saturday.
