You may have seen in the news recently that President Trump signed an Executive Order demanding the reduction of several agencies, including the IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Services) “to the maximum extent consistent with applicable law.” IMLS is the primary federal funding source to museums and all types of libraries in the United States.
What is the IMLS and why does this matter?
The IMLS is an independent grant-making federal organization that also conducts research and develops policy. The Institute helps libraries and museums innovate and fosters lifelong learning and cultural and civic engagement. Library funding draws less than 0.003% of the annual federal budget.
What does IMLS do for Iowa libraries?
IMLS distributes roughly $160 million annually to state library agencies across the country through the Library Services Technology Act (LSTA). The Iowa State Library receives about $2 million which funds numerous services for our patrons though local libraries, such as free interlibrary loan of materials and use of IAShares (a courier service) to deliver those books, access to Ebooks and Audio Books through BRIDGES/Libby as well as many more services behind the scenes such as our meeting room scheduling software, Summer Reading Program materials, STEM Kits, library accreditation, and so much more! Loss of this funding would significantly impact the services Iowa libraries are able to provide.
