FORT MADISON — Fire Chief Chad Hannum of the Fort Madison Fire Department has announced that residents will be allowed to burn leaves without obtaining a burn permit during a designated period this fall.
The permitted leaf-burning period will run from October 20th through November 23rd, 2025.
During this time, Fort Madison residents may burn leaves on their private property without first securing a burn permit. However, all existing local regulations and safety guidelines must still be followed to ensure public safety and environmental responsibility.
“We understand that leaf accumulation in the fall can be significant, and this temporary measure is designed to help residents manage yard waste more efficiently,” Hannum said. “That said, we urge everyone to burn responsibly and to follow all safety requirements to protect both property and public health.”
Important Guidelines for Leaf Burning:
• Burning is allowed only during daylight hours.
• The location of the burning area is not less than 50 feet from any structure or not less than 15 feet from any structure if an approved waste burner is used.
• Burning must be conducted at least 50 feet from any structures or combustible materials.

• No open burning will be allowed on any Public Street, alley, or sidewalk.
• Only dry leaves may be burned — no trash, construction debris, or other prohibited materials.
• Fires must be attended at all times and fully extinguished before being left unattended.\
• Wind conditions must be calm. Burning during high winds is strictly prohibited.
• A water source or fire extinguisher must be readily available on-site.
• Any fire causing a nuisance or reported discomfort shall be immediately extinguished.
The Fire Chief may prohibit any or all open burning when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make open burning hazardous. Failure to follow regulations may result in fines or revocation of the burn period for the individual or for the community as a whole.
