FORT MADISON - Climax Molybdenum of Fort Madison continues to support projects enriching the community with its most recent $10,000 gift to Old Fort Madison Preservation, Inc. (OFMP) to help reconstruct and resurrect the Old Fort Madison replica in Riverview Park.
“This social investment in Old Fort Madison Preservation, Inc., aligns with Freeport’s community priorities, which includes promoting cultural heritage. Freeport values our partnership with OFMP and its efforts toward strengthening community identity, fostering local pride, and creating opportunities for cultural engagement, making it a meaningful investment in both our past and our future,” said Dravin Mahes, General Manager, Fort Madison Operations.
OFMP is on the cusp of launching a capital campaign to raise $3.5 million to accomplish its goals. The group will be seeking corporate sponsors, private donations and pursing local, state and federal grants to achieve its objectives.
“Old Fort Madison Preservation, Inc.  is very appreciative for the generous support of our first local industry to step forward in support of the preservation and improvement of our wonderful fort.  We are confident that their leadership and future support will be followed by many others so that this unique and important part of our local, state and national history is preserved.  Our special thanks go to Mr. Dravin Mahes, General Manager , Amy Conlee, Senior Community Development Specialist and Climax Molybdenum.
The first phase is to repair and reconstruction the replica buildings, raise all structures 4 feet above the flood plain; and reconstruct the stockade. Further, OFMP has drawings and plans to  build the Living History Center that will not only house displays and materials related to the fort and the War of 1812, but will also feature revolving displays of Native Americans, President James Madison, Dolley Madison, the local role of Fort Madison in all of the nation’s wars, the Civil Rights movement, women’s suffrage, the railroad industry, politics and more.
OFMP is to lease the fort area in Riverview Park from the city. In fact, OFMP President Bill Napier presented the group’s plan in greater detail to the Fort Madison City Council on Oct 21.
|Once the two-phase project is completed, OFMP will oversee operations of the fort and Living History Center.
While also arranging funding for the cause, OFMP volunteers work at several events to raise funds for its regular start-up and operating costs.
