FORT MADISON - The Fort Madison City Council will hear program details for a proposed homeless shelter in the city at its regular meeting Tuesday night in council chambers.
Jon Heyland, owner of Floorcrafters in Fort Madison is spearheading the effort and will talk about how the shelter will be organized and funded. The new shelter is being planned from the convent house formally owned by the St. Mary’s Parish. Heyland said a non-profit that will operate the facility is hoping to have it operational within six months.
Another key item on the agenda will be the review of the city’s annual audit, which will provide some insight into Fort Madison’s financial health and management over the past fiscal year.
Old Fort Madison Preservation, Inc. is also scheduled to share progress and plans, highlighting ongoing efforts at the historic museum on the city’s riverfront.
A special event permit for the upcoming Worship and Prayer Night is also on the schedule. The council could vote on waiving fees for the event.
Safety improvements will be also addressed as the council updates parking restrictions, specifically removing parking on 24th Street from Avenue H to Avenue L. This change is intended to improve traffic flow and enhance safety for both drivers and pedestrians in the area.
Also on the agenda are votes to set public hearings and bid dates for the new Fort Madison Fire Station project and for updates to sidewalk regulations.
The council will also vote on promotional lists for fire department positions and mayoral appointments to commissions.
The council will hear regular updates from city officials and announcements from council members and the mayor. The next regular meeting will take place on Monday, November 3 due to the Nov. 4 general election.
