DONNELLSON - The Lee County Fair’s Kids' Day on Friday was buzzing bright and early even on a hot midsummer day, with livestock showings and the ‘cutest rabbit’ contest.
The Keith Leff magic and comedy show played routinely throughout the afternoon. Crowds ricocheted from the animal show and concessions to carnival games and rides.
At the pens next to the livestock show arena, a cluster of exhibitors were grooming their hogs to prepare them for the show ring as fair-goers watched. Attendees grabbed their hot dogs or nachos right outside the animal showing arena, enjoyed the show, and visited the rabbit barn to cast a vote on their favorite bunny. Inside the barn carried not only a surplus of rabbits of all shapes and sizes, but a vibrant peacock and different types of birds. A couple of kids were tending to their rabbits in the barn.
“I’ve been showing rabbits for five years,” said Madison Koller as she held her black and white rabbit 'Lulu'.
Ridge Lindner was also in the rabbit barn enthusiastically campaigning for his rabbit, 'Telly'. Lindner just won Little Mister Lee County on Wednesday, says Lindner’s aunt Maron Essing. Lindner's family regularly participates in the Lee County Fair, and Ridge spends all day at the fair.

In the evening, the fair was still swarming with kids running around, going on rides, and playing the carnival games. The rain was due to come but that didn’t stop kids from running around with water guns and parents playing the carnival games with their children.
The magic and comedy show act, Keith Leff, hails from Kansas City and tours nationwide, having done magic since he was 7. His self aware comedy style and his interactive magic show entertained both kids and adults, who were cheering and laughing along.
“When you love what you do, you never work a day in your life,” said Leff.
Leff had been performing since Thursday and until Saturday at Connection Bank Stage and entertaining the crowds.
“It’s been great… We had a record turnout, a bunch of kids showed up, had a ton of fun."
