There’s something about this time of year that just feels like a fresh start, and that feeling for me, begins when our local greenhouses open their doors for the season. It’s more than just shopping for plants; it’s a tradition, a sign that warmer days are here, and a chance to bring a little color back into our lives after winter.
This year, I’m especially excited to get my hands in the dirt with a purpose. I’ll be planting butterfly weed and other plants to support monarch butterflies. Butterfly weed is essential for monarch caterpillars—it’s where they grow and begin their journey. I’m also adding Mexican sunflowers (tithonia diversifolia) to my garden, which provide a vital nectar source for monarchs as they prepare for their incredible migration south.
That migration connects us in a unique way to Mexico, giving us yet another opportunity to celebrate Fort Madison’s deep Mexican heritage. By planting with intention, we’re not just beautifying our yards, we’re creating small but meaningful habitats that support one of nature’s most remarkable travelers.
So as you visit our local greenhouses this spring, I encourage you to think beyond the flower bed. Consider planting something that gives back. Together, we can make Fort Madison a welcoming stop along the monarchs’ journey and a community that blooms with purpose.
