FORT MADISON - At approximately 9:50 a.m. Wednesday, Fort Madison Fire & Rescue was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 1500 block of Avenue F. Initial reports indicated a potentially fully involved residence.
Engine 9411, Engine 9415, and Chief Chad Hannum were dispatched at 9:52 a.m. and immediately responded from the station. Hannum arrived on scene at approximately 9:53 a.m.—just over one minute from dispatch—and reported a working fire with visible smoke conditions.
While en-route, and approximately 3–4 blocks from the scene, Hannum observed a visible column of smoke and upgraded the response by initiating an all-call for off-duty personnel.
Engines 9411 and 9415 arrived shortly after at approximately 9:54 a.m., placing fire attack crews on scene within minutes of the initial dispatch.
Upon arrival, crews encountered active fire conditions on the second floor of a two-story residential structure, with smoke and flames visible from a bedroom window on the west side of the home.
Firefighters rapidly deployed and initiated a coordinated fire attack. Crews applied water from the exterior to quickly reduce fire intensity, then made entry to conduct an interior attack, advancing directly to the second floor to locate and extinguish the fire at its source.

Due to the close proximity of neighboring homes, additional hose lines were deployed to protect adjacent structures. These efforts were effective, and the fire was contained to a single second-floor bedroom.
All occupants were confirmed to be out of the residence. No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported.
Fire crews remained on scene to complete overhaul operations and ensure full extinguishment. Utilities were secured, and the structure was turned over to the appropriate parties.
The Fort Madison Fire Department conducted an on-scene investigation to determine the fire originated in a second-floor bedroom. At this time, the cause of the fire is classified as undetermined, with an accidental cause considered most probable. Investigators are evaluating all available information, including the potential involvement of an electronic cellular device.
Hannum said the incident demonstrates the critical importance of rapid response and well-trained personnel in limiting fire damage and protecting surrounding properties.
He said in residential areas where homes are in close proximity, these early minutes are the difference between a room fire and a total loss—or multiple homes lost.
Fort Madison Police, Lee County EMS, Fort Madison Public Works, Lee County Sheriff's Office and MidAmerican Energy assisted at the scene.
