Firefighters rescue scared dog off highway

FORT MADISON – Fort Madison firefighters rescued a dog on Monday after discovering the animal hunkered down under a vehicle.
The day shift was on their way back from the training tower when they observed several motorists stopped along the roadway tending to the animal.
According to fire reports, firefighters stopped at the scene to assist the motorists and discovered the animal withdrawing under the vehicle. After donning gear, one firefighter was able to reach in and pull the animal out without injury.
A collar on the animal had the owner’s name and the pet was able to be returned to the owner unharmed.
Lee County Sheriff’s deputies also assisted at the scene near 53rd Street and Avenue O.
