FORT MADISON – The Fort Madison Riverfront playground project got a boost this week in the form of a $50,000 check from a local industry.
City officials were notified about a month ago that the city was a recipient of the donation from the Freeport McMoRan Foundation.
Freeport McMoRan is the parent company of Climax Molybdenum in Fort Madison. The foundation has made several similar donations to the groups in the area for community development efforts.
“We commend the City of Fort Madison in your efforts to create a destination-style playground and activity center that supports the other development efforts happening at the riverfront,” wrote Tracy L Bame, President, Freeport McMoRan Foundation, in a letter to the city dated Nov. 12, 2024.
The playground is part of the city’s riverfront development efforts and will be located to the west of the new Fort Madison Marina and Turnwater Bar and Grill on the newly elevated park ground.
Fort Madison Mayor Matt Mohrfeld and his wife Beth started the park renovation efforts with a $25,000 contribution and fundraising and design efforts are still underway.
