Hancock County man struck by Amtrak train

Plymouth man and dog killed when trying to move ATV across tracks

PLYMOUTH - The Hancock County Sheriffs Office responded to a report of a train versus pedestrian accident near Plymouth, Illinois, on Tuesday May 27, 2025, at approximately 6:18 p.m.
Preliminary investigation revealed that a northbound Amtrak train struck a male subject identified as Aaron R. Atkins, age 42, of Plymouth, Illinois. The incident occurred just north of Plymouth.
According to the investigation, Mr. Atkins was attempting to cross the railroad tracks on an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) when the vehicle became stuck. While attempting to remove the ATV from the tracks, Mr. Atkins was struck by the oncoming train. Mr. Atkins and his dog, who was also at the scene, were both pronounced deceased.
The Hancock County Sheriffs Office extends its condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Atkins during this difficult time.
The incident remains under investigation.
