All six Central Lee golfers shoot under 80 for the first time in Ungerer's career

BURLINGTON – The Central Lee boys golf team pulled off a rare feat Tuesday, showing why they are one of the best 2A golf teams in the state again in 2026.
The Hawks had the top five golfers at the Danville Invitational played at Flint Hills Golf Course in Burlington led by medalist Carson Morrison’s 74. They also had six of the top seven with all six shooting under 80 for the first time in head coach Mike Ungerer's almost forty years.
Carter Jones was right behind as runner up with a 76. Caleb Larson shot a 77, Kaden Swan shot a 78, and Mylan Lowenberg shot a 79. Danville’s Mattix Fumald shot a 79, but so did the Hawks’ Carver Hayes, giving Central Lee six boys under 80.
Morrison had a 36 out, including two birdies on the front nine on holes 1 and 4. He parred seven straight holes on the back nine before carding a double on 17 and bogeying 18. Larson had the best nine of the day putting up a 35 on the front nine with just one bogey on two and then getting birdies on 4 and 9. Swan had two birdies on the back nine, including the only 3 of the day on the tricky 17th, which features a tight green off a right dog-leg.
The Hawks won the nine-team event with a crazy good 305, 36 strokes ahead of the field.
Head Coach Mike Ungerer, who’s coached for close to four decades, said he can’t remember a tournament where all six players shot under 80.
“I can’t remember a tournament where all six players scored in the 70s, but last year at our Invitational, we had 5 players in the 70s and the other player shot 81,” he said.
The Hawks are currently ranked 9th in the state in 2A
“The players are working hard to return to the state tournament and see where they place in the state,” he said.

“I try to get the players to focus on the next shot and not the last (mental toughness). With this group of players, I don’t have to do a lot of coaching, but I try to get them to work on an area of their game that needs improvement."
West Burlington/Notre Dame was second at 341. Holy Trinity Catholic had a nice showing at 3rd with their best effort of the year at 349.
The Crusaders' Zane Houtz shot an 85 to lead HTC. Blake Mohfeld, Jameson Denning, and Max Kruse all came in with 88s to set the scoring for Holy Trinity. Brock Scheetz shot a 93 and Nathan Box came in under 100 at 98.
Carter Land had an 83 to pace Keokuk and was joined under 90 by Colton Spicer with an 88. The Chiefs finished with 354, good enough for 5th place.
In the girls' meet, the Fort Madison Lady Hounds captured the title with a 366 led by Kylie Lumino’s 82.  West Burlington/Notre Dame’s Emersyn Hopkins and Ailee Booten were medalist and runner-up with 78 and 79.
Brenna Gathers shot an 89 for the Hounds, good enough for sixth overall.  Natalie Wright carded a 94 and Jaycee Fullenkamp shot a 101 to round out the scoring Hounds. Fort Madison won by 13 strokes over WB/ND.

Holy Trinity shot a 419, good enough for 5th place. The Lady Crusaders were led by Elizabeth Griffin’s 96. Griffin finished in 12th overall. Emma Mohrfeld shot a 103, followed by Calli Kruse’s 109 and Evan Denning’s 111 to round out the scoring golfers.
