BURLINGTON – The Central Lee Lady Hawks dropped a doubleheader to Burlington Monday night wrapping up the regular season and setting up their entry into post season play at West Liberty Thursday night.
Central Lee opened up a 5-0 lead in the top of the second highlighted by Aubree Bunnell’s three-run bomb with two-outs. But Burlington would respond *RESPONDED, NOT 'WOULD RESPOND', GETS REPETITIVE BC NEXT PARAGRAPH FIRST TWO SENTENCES SAY THAT* with three runs of their own in the bottom half off Rayliegh Burden.
The Hawks would score again in top of the third before Grayhound starter Kylie Hill slammed the door. The Grayhounds would score three more in the bottom of the fourth and again in the bottom of the sixth for a 10-6 win.
Kenna Sandoval was 2-4 at the plate with a run scored. Bunnell and Charli Day had the other hits for the Hawks. Burden went 2 1/3 allowing four runs, none earned on three hits. Macy Butler came on in relief and surrendered six runs, again none earned on six hits while fanning one and walking one.
In the second game, Burlington shut out the Hawks 8-0 behind a two hit performance from starter and incoming freshman Kalley Anderson. Sandoval and Jali Hawk had the only hits for Central Lee (15-20).
Thursday’s game takes place at West Liberty High School in the Class 3A, Region 8 Quarterfinals.
Lady Hounds get win over Oskaloosa
OSKALOOSA – The Fort Madison Lady Hounds gave up four runs in the bottom of the seventh, but starter Lucia Darnell was able to hold on for a 7-6 win Monday night. The Hounds dropped a 6-1 makeup game with Washington Tuesday night to wrap up the regular season. The Bloodhounds now travel to Keokuk (0-32) on Thursday to open Class 4A Region 5 postseason action at 7 p.m.
The Hounds put up three runs in the first and third innings and then added a run in the fourth to hold a 7-2 advantage after four. The first three runs came around on fielder’s choices and an error. In the third inning Nallie Menke, Ava Fuget, Kylie Lumino all singled to open the inning and would come around on Lumino’s single and a Darnell ground out.
The Indians had two on down by just a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Darnell got Leah Lorentzen to fly out to center to end the game.
The Hounds were held to just one hit in the Tuesday game with the Demons, a fourth inning home-run by Jordyn Marshall. Emma Snaadt took the loss, going all seven innings allowing eight hits and six runs, none earned while striking out one and walking two.
Fort Madison boys fall to Oskaloosa
OSKALOOSA – The Fort Madison boys fell 9-3 on Monday to wrap up the baseball regular season.
The Bloodhounds now travel to Keokuk on Friday for a tough test with Marion 25-8 in the Class 3A Substate 5 first round of the post-season at Marion High School.
The Hounds (9-21) scored two runs in the top of fourth inning trailing 5-0. Reece Huey reached on an error, then Stefan Berlett tripled to right, scoring Huey from first. Berlett, Huey, Owen Weisinger, and Brae Hill had the only hits for the Hounds in the loss.
Owen Boyer took the loss going three innings, allowing five runs all earned on five hits while striking out two and walking three. Owen Huffman and Micheal Fuller both came on in relief in the loss.
