PELLA – Fort Madison dropped a non-conference 78-64 loss to Pella Monday night on the road.
The Bloodhounds were in the battle in the first half trailing by just three at 35-32 at the break behind Julian Dear’s 10 points. The Hounds were up 20-14 at the end of the first quarter with some hot early shooting, but the Dutch turned things around in the second period outscoring Fort Madison 21-12 holding the Hounds to just five points in the final five minutes of the half.
Pella would stretch their three-point lead at the break to 10 just two minutes into the second half and would pull away from there.
Nolan Guzman tried to keep the game close in the second half with 14 points in the final two periods including four-of-four shooting at the free throw line. Guzman would finish with a game-high 22 points. Dear had 18 and Dayton Lamar would finish with 11.
Lamar went to the free throw line eight times in the second half converting five, but only managed one bucket from the floor in that span. Dear had a couple 3-balls in the second half.
The Bloodhounds stand at 1-2 on the young season and 1-1 in the Southeast Conference behind Washington and Burlington both 2-0 in loop play. The Hounds face off with the Burlington Grayhounds for the first time Friday night at Johannson Gymnasium in Burlington.
Guzman is leading the Hounds with a 16.3 point-per-game clip. Lamar is at 12 points per game and Dear is at 11.7. Lamar is averaging just over five boards a game.
