Hounds hold off Washington on the road

Weekly sports wrap up highlights wins for Hounds, and Hawks

Hounds fourth at Fairfield
FAIRFIELD – The Fort Madison boys golf team kicked off the Southeast Conference rotation Monday at Fairfield Country Club.
The Hounds rolled up 176 for fourth place behind Washington, Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant. Keokuk finished fifth with a 199.
Cole Quittem had a 39 in the nine-hole event to lead the Hounds. Colten Boyer shot a 42 and Rowan Benda had a 47. Lucas Helmick had a 48 to round out the scoring Bloodhounds. Daniel Seager had a 57 and Conner Cale carded a 60.
Washington’s Rajan Roth was medalist with a 36. Keokuk was led by sophomore Colton Spicer’s 46.
On Thursday the Hounds again finished fourth in the second conference go-round, this time in Fort Madison.. The Hounds finished with a 181. Behind Mt. Pleasant (166), Fairfield (162) and winner Washington with a 149. Roth again was medalist with a 4-under 32. Quittem led the Hounds with a 41 followed by Boyer’s 45, Benda and Cale each with a 47 and Jarod Jenkins with a 48.

Fort Madison boys knock off Washington
WASHINGTON – Jonah Santiago and Jack Ragar provided the winning margin for the Fort Madison Bloodhounds Thursday night in a 2-1 win over Washington in Southeast Conference boys soccer.
Santiago scored on a break-away unassisted at the 20-minute mark. Ragar would then get on the board when he found the next off a double assist from Santiago and Layne Rung five minutes later.
Washington would get their goal with 10 seconds left in the match. Keelynd Ross had seven saves and allowed just the one goal. The Hounds host Keokuk Monday night.

Hawk boys roll to 2-0 to start season
DONNELLSON – Peter Seyb scored five goals to help the Central Lee Hawks to a 11-1 win over Keokuk in boy’s high school soccer action Monday in Donnellson.
The Hawks scored early and often with Jaedin Oglesby breaking a 0-0 tie at the 27:54 mark when he scored on a break away. Seyb then scored back-to-back goals for a 3-0 lead. Keeper Tristan Robins had two total saves in the match and held the Chiefs scoreless in the first 30 minutes. The Chiefs would get on the board in the second half with their only goal of the match at 33:15 of the second period. Central Lee would then score three in the next seven minutes with Seyb, Colton Taft and Dominic Holbert all finding the net. Mason Sanders would wrap things up with a final goal at 16:11 setting the 10-goal mark. Taft had three assists in the match. Sanders had a couple. Oglesby had three goals on the night.
On Tuesday, the Hawks downed Centerville 7-0 with all the Central Lee goals coming in the second half. The defense kept the Hawks in great position all night as Robins didn’t face a single shot on goal. Seyb again led the offense with two goals. Zach Estrada, Holbert, Oglesby, Sanders, and Taft all had goals in the win. Estrada and Taft each had two assists in the win.

Chiefs take down Lady Hawks
DONNELSON – Darby Tackes had three goals to lead the Lady Chiefs past Central in girls high school soccer Monday. The Chiefs had a 6-0 lead at the half. Relina Wong had three saves and allowed one goal for Keokuk.
The Chiefs then dropped their first match of the season Tuesday when they fell 0-7 to Canton in Missouri. Wong had 18 saves in the match and allowed five goals.
On Thursday Keokuk opened Southeast Conference play with a 7-1 win over Mt. Pleasant. Olivia Cochenour had two goals in the final seven minutes of the first play one unassisted and the other on a ball from Tackes. Keokuk had 3-0 lead at the half and then got four more goals in the second half from Bella Boltz, Tackes, Ember Courtois, and Bailey Palmer. They host Fort Madison on Monday.

Holy Trinity boys second at Riverview
VAN BUREN – The Holy Trinity Catholic Crusaders shot a 181 for second place at Riverview Country Club in Van Buren County.
The Warriors won the triangular with a 166. Davis County shot a 200.
Brock Sheetz led the Crusaders with a 43 while Max Kruse, Nathan Box and Zane Houtz all carded 46s for the scoring HTC golfers.
Blake Mohrfeld and Jameson Denning shot 49s, while Caleb Rea shot a 52 and TJ Gendron carded a 54.
For the girls, HTC shot a 219 for 3rd place. Elizabeth Griffin shot a 47, followed by Emma Mohrfeld’s 53, Eva Dennings’ 56 and Calli Kruse’s 63.

Central Lee golfers fall to Mediapolis in dual
WAPELLO – Central Lee’s Caleb Larson and Carter Jones chased Mediapolis co-medalists Brock Sparks and Ephram Hallgren Thursday at a dual at Heritage Oaks Golf Course 161-166
Larson and Jones both shot a 40, while the Bulldog duo both carded 39s to help Mediapolis to the win on the par 37 front nine.
Carson Morrison and Kaden Swan each shot a 43, while Mylan Lowenberg carded a 44 and Carver Hayes shot a 46 for the Hawks.
In the girls match, the Hawks fell 216-277.
Kate Wischmeier was medalist with a 51 and Cardin Miller was runner-up with a 52 for the Bullettes.
Lily Smith led the Lady Hawks with a 54. Others scoring for Central Lee were three freshman Summer Hunold (71), Makayla Mertens (75), and Ava Derr (77). Leah Azinger shot a 79.

Central Lee runners set PRs at WIU
MACOMB – The Central Lee boys set 10 personal bests and the girl 11 marks at Western Illinois University Friday afternoon.
Orion St. Clair ran a 11:42.41 in the 3200 and claimed 3rd place with his fastest time ever. Brett Cook ran a best 54.81 in the 400 for 3rd place. Cook also ran the first leg of the 4x400 with Luke Kruse, Austin Fogarty and Ward Fraise at 3:39.94 also good for 3rd at the event and a best time for those four.
Aubrey Weber hurled the discus 108’11” for her best mark and a 3rd place finish.  Caden Crozier had two personal bests in the 800 at 2:28.92 and the 1600 at 5:29.22. The boys 4x100 team of Kain Arrowood, Blake Davis, Kruse and Evan Fogarty ran a personal best 46.48, while the girls 4x200 team of Brylee Cook, Kaitlyn Morrison, Madison Frueh and Kaylee Moeller ran a 2:02.21.
