FORT MADISON - The Fort Madison Bloodhounds captured a close 42-31 Southeast Conference wrestling win over Fairfield in a Thursday night event that survived the winter storms that blanketed the area this week.
The win came on Senior night and a night where the Bloodhound faithful honored head coach Ryan Smith for 27 years in the program. Smith announced his retirement from the head coach spot last week. This year will be his last overseeing the program.
Cole Quittem got things going for the Hounds with a pin at 106 in 4:27. Fairfield would return the favor with a pin at 120. Then the Hounds’ Luke Vanderpool (120), Noah Swigart (126), and Logan Pennock (132) gave the Bloodhounds some wiggle room with three straight wins. Vanderpool and Swigart both recorded falls and Pennock scored a 12-0 major decision.
Fairfield would narrow the gap with back-to-back-to-back wins at 138, 144, and 150 to make it a 22-21 match.
Senior Nolan Riddle, who’s been phenomenal through December, got Fort Madison back on track with a win by forfeit at 157 and Joe Hartman racked up a fall at 165 over Calvin McClain in the third period to push the lead to 34-21.
The two teams would trade a couple decisions with Ike Thacher getting a 16-0 technical fall at 190. Cory Arnett then scored a 5-0 win over Logan Johnson to cap the night.
The match was one of the few sporting events that survived a full week of snowfall over the area. This weekend's high school slates were wiped out as the area recovers. Record cold temperatures are expected to start next week so schedule changes will be shared as they become available.
