Hounds open with win over WB

Benda qualifies for state tennis tournament May 26th in Waterloo

FORT MADISON – The Fort Madison boys' baseball team opened the season with a 3-1 win over West Burlington Wednesday night in Fort Madison.
Sophomore Cade Blind went 3-3 at the plate with an RBI. Case Fraise was 1-3 with the other two RBIs. Sophomore Owen Huffman went five innings on the bump, allowing just one hit while fanning six and walking six.
The Bloodhound scored two runs in the bottom. Stefan Berlett and Noah Schinstock both drew a walk to start the inning. Then Blind hit a no-out single to  moving pinch runner Eric Cornelis and Schinstock into scoring position. Fraise then striped a 1-1 pitch to right field, plating Cornelis and Schinstock. Blind was gunned down at home trying to go three bases on the hit.
They would put on another run in the 5th. Lamb would draw a two-out walk and get replaced on the basepath by Jay Ellison. Ellison would come around on a hard shot to short by Blind for a 3-1 lead, setting the final score. Incoming freshman Brae Hill came on in relief and pitched two scoreless innings, fanning two and walking two.
Fort Madison opens the year 1-0 and plays host to Davenport Assumption Thursday night.

Lady Hounds fall in season opener
FORT MADISON – The Fort Madison Lady Hounds dropped a 7-4 season-opener to West Burlington at Baxter Sports Complex Wednesday night in Fort Madison.
Lucia Darnell went all seven innings for Fort Madison, allowing seven runs, none earned on nine hits. She struck out 10 and walked five in the loss.
Fort Madison committed four errors, including a throwing error in the top of the 3rd that led to a 4-run Falcon top half. Fort Madison had two outs in the inning following the error. But back-to-back walks and a double from Orayana Gonzalez drove in two runs. Lacie Felkins then singled on a 1-0 pitch to right, scoring two more for a 4-2 lead.

Fort Madison would add a run in the bottom of the third when Nillie Menke singled to center, swiped second, and then took 3rd on an error. She scored on Kylie Lumino’s sacrifice fly to right.
West Burlington would add three more runs in the top of the seventh on a couple of singles, again with two outs.
Jordyn Marshall homered with one out in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-4. The Lady Hounds put two runners on with two outs, but a strikeout ended the inning.
The girls start the season 0-1 and are off until Tuesday when they host Muscatine at Baxters.

Benda qualifies for IHSAA state tennis tourney
FORT MADISON – Fort Madison Bloodhounds’ Rowan Benda qualified for the Class 1A State Tennis Tournament May 26 and 27th in Waterloo. The junior captured second place in the singles' events at Fairfield on May 16th.

Kruse shoots 88 at 1A districts
SIGOURNEY – Holy Trinity’s Max Kruse shot an 88 Tuesday at the Class 1A District golf meet in Sigourney. Kruse’s 88 was good for 38th place out of 79 golfers at the event.
Head Coach John Goetz said Kruse played better than the score showed and had an excellent year for the Crusaders.
