Hounds take 8th at stacked Liberty Invite

WENTZVILLE, Mo. – The Fort Madison Bloodhounds threw their best at some of the best wrestlers in Missouri Saturday and came away with 8th place.
The Hounds picked up 91.5 points in the double elimination tournament behind a second-place finish by senior Logan Pennock at 132 lbs. Pennock entered the week as the No. 10 wrestler in the state at 132 according to IAWrestle.
Pennock rolled through his bracket with a bye in opening round wrestling and then three pins, none of which took more than a minute including a :27 second pin in the second round. The Hound’s only loss of the day came in the title match against 8-0 Conner Roach of Sullivan. Roach came in as the No. 1 seed in the 132 bracket and got the pin over Pennock at 1:26 of the first period. Roach had a nearfall and two takedowns before getting the pin. Pennock scored an escape at 1:36 but trailed 10-1 prior to the fall.
Rainer Johnson captured 4th place at 157 lbs going 3-2 on the day and fell to Troy Buchanan’s Josh Whitebread in a tight 2-1 decision. The match was scoreless entering the final 3rd period when Whitebread scored a reversal 20 seconds into the period and rode the position for the next minute and a half. Johnson worked an escape with 9 seconds left but couldn’t secure a takedown prior to the horn.
Aaron Warner also captured a 4th place finish falling in the 3rd place match to St. Charles’ Deray Coleman by fall in the 3rd period. Warner also went 3-2 on the day for Fort Madison.
James Fuller finished 5th at 132, three spots behind Pennock. Fuller recorded a first-period pin over Luke Lawson of Palmyra in the 5th place match. He went 3-1 wrestling on the day with his only loss coming to Pennock in the third round.
Oliver Schelich took 6th place at 113 lbs. going 3 for 3 on the day and falling in the 5th-place match to Nathan Fisher of Cahokia in a 1st-period fall.
Other place finishers included freshman Cliff Stewart 7th at 215 lbs. and Eric Cornelis 8th at 150.
The Hounds wrestle in a boys/girls dual meet at Mt. Pleasant Thursday night.
