WEST POINT – The Holy Trinity Catholic Crusaders swept the Keokuk Chiefs in a doubleheader at South Park Wednesday night.
The Crusaders won the first game 9-1 behind the one-hit performance of starter Sydney Jarvis. The junior struck out eight and walked just one.
HTC broke open a 2-1 game in the bottom of the fourth inning with six runs keyed by Brooklyn Todd's 2-RBI single to center with one out to give the Crusaders an 8-1 lead. Jarvis would give up just one walk over the next two innings to preserve the win.
Cadyn Holmes led the Crusaders at the plate with three hits and three RBIs. She also scored a run. Alivia Holmes, Makayla Simpson, and Ellie Hellman all had multi-hit games for HTC.
In the nightcap, the HTC offense exploded for 17 runs to offset the nine runs put up by the Lady Chiefs. Simpson took the circle for HTC and went five innings allowing five hits and seven runs, six earned while fanning three and walking eight. Jarvis came on in relief in the bottom of the sixth to stop the Keokuk rally.
HTC led 8-3 going into the top of the sixth, but Keokuk put up six runs after Simpson had held them in check through five. The six runs gave Keokuk a one run lead, but the Crusaders responded with nine runs in the bottom half of the sixth to set the mercy rule. Kat DiPrima scored the mercy run on a wild pitch with two outs.
Cadyn Holmes had four hits in the second game, giving her seven on the day. Kara Lake and Kenna Gittings each had four hits in four appearances in the onslaught. Jarvis and Claire Crabtree each had multi-hit games for the 2-2 Crusaders.
HTC started the season 0-2 with losses at Central Lee and Danville. They travel to Mediapolis for a SEI Super Conference game Friday.
