WEST POINT – Holy Trinity Catholic is blowing past school records and hopes that trend continues.
The Crusaders knocked off West Burlington/Notre Dame 11-1 on Thursday night to earn a share of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division title for the first time since the program restarted in 2020.
Holy Trinity has now won their last nine games and took just four innings to invoke the mercy rule on the Falcons. The win moves HTC to 8-4 in their final conference game, which leaves them tied with Mediapolis at the top.
The Crusaders will now wait til July 8 to open Class 1A Regional play where they will play the winner of WACO/Pekin in the quarterfinals at South Park in West Point.
Sydney Jarvis got the win for HTC Thursday going all four innings and surrendering just two hits and one earned run while fanning three and walking two. The junior also went 2-3 at the plate with 3 RBI. Claire Crabtree and Ellie Hellman both had 2 RBI in the win. Hellman was 3-3 at the plate, all singles. Alivia Holmes, Kenna Gittings, Jarvis and Hellman all had multi-hit games in the win.
Holy Trinity scored twice in the first inning and then came up big in the second with four more when Hellman and Kara Lake hit back-to-back one-out singles and then Holmes singled in Madisyn Griffin pinch running for Hellman. Jarvis would work a walk with the bases loaded to score Lake and Cadyn Holmes drove in Alivia Holmes with a sacrifice fly. Gitting would score on a infield throwing error for a 6-1 lead.
The Crusaders would add a run in the third and then put up four more in the bottom of the fourth to invoke the 10-run rule.
Lady Hounds snap 3-game slide
FORT MADISON – A five-run second inning was enough to help the Fort Madison Lady Hounds to a 6-1 win over Mt. Pleasant Thursday night at Baxter Sports Complex.
Fort Madison put the first three runners on without an out in the bottom of the second. Jordyn Marshall then singled to right scoring two runs and leaving two on. Nallie Menke then laid down a bunt to load the bases. Ava Fuget would hit into a double play when her liner was nabbed at third and the force was applied.
Kylie Lumino was plunked to load the bases again and then back-to-back RBI singles from Lucia Darnell and Emma Snaadt scored three to set the final score.
Both teams went scoreless the rest of the way with Darnell holding the Panthers to just four hits and one earned run. She struck out seven over seven innings while walking just two.
Marshall and Snaadt each had two hits. Marshall had two RBI as did Darnell. Menke scored two runs.
The Lady Hounds move to 6-8 in the Southeast Conference and 10-18 overall. They travel to Oskaloosa on Monday to start the final week of the regular season. They host Washington on Tuesday and then open Class 4A Region 5 action at Keokuk in the quarterfinals. All three games are 7 p.m. starts.
Lady Hawks roll Keokuk 12-2
DONNELLSON – Kenna Sandoval drove in five runs including a third inning grand slam to lead the Hawks to a 12-2 four-inning win over Keokuk Wednesday in Donnellson.
Central Lee rattled off nine hits in the win spearheaded by Sandoval’s night at the plate. The Hawks put up nine runs in the third for a 10-run lead that held up through the first four invoking the 10-run rule and ending the game after 3.5 innings.
Aubree Bunnell, Charli Day, Olivia Day, Rayleigh Burden and Jali Hawk, and Marci Benner all had hits for Central Lee.
Macy Butler went all four innings in the circle giving up five hits and two runs both earned while fanning one and walking none.
13-year-old Ward gets first hole-in-one.
FORT MADISON – Noah Ward, a 13-year-old from Fort Madison, recorded his first-ever ace on Friday evening at Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course.
Ward used a 6-iron on the 175-yard par 3 No. 11.
The shot was witnessed by his father, Chad.
