FORT MADISON – The Holy Trinity Catholic boys' basketball team honored some seniors Tuesday night and then celebrated with an 80-36 win over New London at home.
Senior Luke Hellige scored 35 to almost single-handedly outscore the Tigers.
The first half didn’t give an indication that the SEI Super Conference game would be so lopsided. New London trailed by just two points 11-9 headed into the second quarter.
The Crusaders would stretch the lead a little, but nothing insurmountable going into the half. The teams were tied at 22 with three minutes left in the first half, but a 7-0 run to the horn gave an indication that momentum was turning.
Holy Trinity had one of their most prolific quarters of the season when they put up 30 in the third. Hellige put up 10 in the period, including a couple 3-balls, and Koby Jones added eight. Adam Sobczak had six as HTC put the game out of reach at 59-27 going into the final period. Holy Trinity Catholic’s defense held the Tigers to just five points in the third period and nine in the fourth in pulling away for the win.
Sobczak finished with 12 points, Layne Rung had 15, and Jones finished with 13 in the win. Jones, Sobczak, and Hellige were all honored prior to the game as Crusader seniors.
HTC moves to 10-3 in the SEISC and 13-3 overall with the win. They travel to Wapello on Thursday and then host Mediapolis on Friday night for Homecoming.
