BURLINGTON - The Holy Trinity boys slipped into a tie for second in the SEI Superconference South division heading into the holiday break after knocking off previously unbeaten Burlington Notre Dame 55-54 Friday night in Burlington.
The Crusaders held Notre Dame scoreless over the final three minutes of play and then converted a bucket in the final moments to grab the win.
HTC trailed most of the game, but battled back to several ties through three quarters. They took a brief 51-50 lead with four minutes left, but then stalled at 51 for about three minutes as Notre Dame rebuilt a 54-51 lead. The Crusaders got a bucket inside of two minutes to cut the lead to one and then scored again while the defense locked down the Nikes down the stretch.
Senior Luke Hellige, who’s tied for 14th in the state in scoring led the Crusaders again with 24 points, just under his average of 25.3. He has 152 points on the young season which is ninth best in Class 1A.
Layne Rung had 13 in the win for HTC. Shay Stephens had 19 to lead the Nikes (5-1, 4-1).
Both teams are now off for the holiday break. HTC (5-1, 4-1) gets back after it on Jan. 3 with a trip to New London in SEISC South play.
