FORT MADISON – A 25-3 fourth quarter rally pushed the Holy Trinity boys basketball team past Fairfield in a non-conference post-holiday matchup Tuesday night at Shottenkirk Gym in Fort Madison.
Holy Trinity (7-3, 4-2 SEISC) trailed 16-10 at the end of the first quarter and that was the good part of the quarter. The Crusaders were down by as much as 11 when the Trojans raced out to a 14-3 lead with two minutes left in the opening period.
Layne Rung’s 3-ball in the final minute of the period spurred a 7-2 late run that created some momentum headed into the second quarter.
Holy Trinity would get things turned around, outscoring Fairfield 18-12 in the second behind Luke Hellige’s seven points. Hellige would lead all scorers with 24 points on the night. The junior was just 9 of 23 from the field, but shot a clean four of four from the freethrow line. He also pulled down six rebounds for the Crusaders.
HTC would extend the slim 29-28 halftime lead to 44-41 at the end of the third period and then would hold the Trojans to just three points on some very stingy defense and uptempo play in the final period.
Senior Conner Gehling and junior Adam Sobczak both added seven points in the final period to help HTC shut down the visiting Trojans.
Rung finished with 18 in the win, and Sobczak added 13.
Holy Trinity travels to 5-3 Central Lee on Friday night in boys/girls SEI Superconference doubleheader.
