AMES - Ernie Schiller is the advisor for HTC and this was his 54th year at the State Science Fair, he has spent countless hours mentoring the students and this year he is taking home 44 awards! Holy Trinity took 28 students to Hilton Colosseum at Iowa State University to compete in the State Science & Technology Fair of Iowa. Jh/Sr high students left Wednesday morning and went the Biotech Lab at Iowa State University to learn about DNA fingerprinting and then visited the USDA Monarch Butterfly Lab. The 6th grade students joined them later that day. Students not only competed in state judging but also competed in FFA judging and 13 were chosen to compete in Seminar, where they presented a slideshow presentation to a panel of judges. Holy Trinity Science students and Ernie Schiller have one more competition this year; later this month at the Iowa Junior Academy of Science Symposium in Cedar Rapids. Breana Houtz, teacher and FFA advisor also started a FFA program at HTC this year and some of the science students were able to compete in the FFA category, they brought home eight awards and two of the students are able to submit their projects for National FFA Convention. Schiller and science boosters are excited to keep this momentum going and continue to grow the science program at HTC. There are a lot of 6th graders and the hope is they will continue to do science research and bring home more awards next year.
