Jarvis throws fifth straight shutout

Holy Trinity takes down No. 8 Highland for 11th win in last 12 games.

HIGHLAND – The Crusader’s softball team continues to shine this year with their 11th win in the past 12 games this time over a top 10 team.
The Crusaders, behind the consistent and efficient pitching of junior Sydney Jarvis, shut out Class 1A No. 8 Highland 7-0 Monday night on the road.
Jarvis hasn’t allowed a run in the past five games and over that span has allowed  just 17 hits, eight of which came last night against the Huskies. She’s 11-2 on the year with a 1.98 ERA and is tied for 4th in Class 1A in wins. Jarvis is also second on the team in hitting at .557.
Freshman Cadyn Holmes and Kara Lake are also hitting over .500 on the season.
On Monday, the Crusaders took a 3-0 lead into the top of the fourth where they added four runs. Makayla Simpson and Ellie Hellman reached with base on balls. And with one out, Morgan Krogmeier hit into a fielder’s choice back to the pitcher. But an error on throw allowed a run to score. Lake then singled on a slow grounder to second bringing in another run.
Kenna Gittings would ground out to second scoring Krogmeier. Alivia Holmes singled scoring Lake who had stolen second base and advanced on Gittings grounder for a 7-0 lead.
Jarvis held things in check from that point on allowing just three singles and was able to escape the seventh inning stranding a couple runners along the way.
The Crusaders host Mediapolis (3-3, 7-8 overall) on Tuesday night at South Park and then travel to Southeast Iowa Super Conference front-runner West Burlington-Notre Dame on Thursday before hosting New London-Winfield-Mt.Union on Friday.

Lady Hounds split with Mt. Pleasant
MOUNT PLEASANT – The Mt. Pleasant Panthers rallied to take the night cap after Fort Madison rallied to win the opener in some dramatic softball Monday night at Mapleleaf Park in Mt. Pleasant.
The Bloodhounds scored two runs in top of the eighth inning highlighted by RBI singles from Emma Snaadt and Nilie Menke snapping a 3-3 tie and then Lucia Darnell went to work getting a strikeout and two groundouts to seal the win 5-3.
Menke was 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored, while Jordyn Marshall was 3 of 4 with 3 RBI in the win. Darnell struck out 13 and allowed the three runs all unearned on just four hits.
In the second game, Fort Madison had a 5-0- lead going into the bottom of the third. Mt. Pleasant scored a run in the frame and five more in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-5 lead.
The Hounds would tie things up in the top of the sixth, but Mt. Pleasant would erupt for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth including a grand slam from sophomore Chaley Cook for a 12-6 lead. A bases-loaded walk brought in the 14th run setting the eight-run rule after six innings ending the game. Snaadt took the loss going five innings allowing 10 runs, four earned on seven hits. Marshall came on in relief and allowed four runs, two earned on two hits while fanning one.
Ava Fuget was a force at the plate going 4-for-4 with an RBI. Menke was 1-of-3 with two runs scored in the loss. The Hounds move to 6-12 overall and 3-4 in the Southeast Conference. They host Cardinal Tuesday night. They host Keokuk on Thursday night and Central Lee on Saturday in 7 p.m. contests.

Hawks fall to Pekin
DONNELLSON – Pekin put up two runs in the top of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie with Central Lee and would hold on for the win in Southeast Iowa Super Conference baseball Monday night in Donnellson.
Ward Fraise went 2-4 at the plate and Carter Ellingboe had a hit representing the only offense for the Hawks in the loss.
Freshman Kellen Weber worked a walk in the fourth inning and came around to score on Ellingboe’s hit for the Hawks only run. Caedon Newton was tagged with the loss going 1 2/3 innings and surrendering two hits while walking three and fanning two.
Blake Davis worked an inning in relief and Weber went 4 1/3 allowing three hits and an earned run while fanning eight.
The Hawks fall to 7-4 overall and 4-2 in SEI Super Conference play. They travel to Danville Tuesday night and then to Highland Thursday. They host front-runner Mediapolis (7-0, 10-2) on Friday night.

Lady Hawks shut out Panthers
DONNELSON – The Central Lee softball team rolled to a 10-0 shutout Monday night over Pekin at Donnellson.
Freshman Macy Butler went all four innings and allowed just two hits in the shutout while striking out two with some solid defense behind the circle.
Incoming freshman McKenna Fransk went 2-3 at the plate with an RBI. Kenna Sandoval was 1-2 with a walk, drove in two runs and scored two runs. Brynnlie Howard added a two-run single to help the Lady Hawks to the win.
The Hawks improve to 2-2 on the year and 7-8 overall. They travel to Danville Tuesday night, Mediapolis Wednesday, No. 8 Highland Thursday, and then return home for Friday night game with Mediapolis, all with 7 p.m. starts. They then play their sixth game in six days at Baxter Sports Complex against Fort Madison at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
