Kangaroo on the loose

One-year-old kangaroo in rural Lee County and has been seen near roadways

LEE COUNTY - Welp. There's a kangaroo loose in Lee County.
It's not April 1 and this is legit.
Theresa Potter told Pen City Current this afternoon, that one of her four young kangaroos has escaped the penned in area where she has three other still contained.
"There is no danger to anyone at all, just please stay away from it and allow work to be done to bring it back home," she said.
Lee County Sheriff Elliott Vandenberg confirmed the escaped genus Macropus on Thursday.
He said deputies were made aware of the situation on Wednesday.
Potter is asking residents who may see the animal near county roadways or highways to leave it alone and not approach it.
The animal was spotted along Hwy. 103, but she said motorists in the areas of Chalk Ridge and Denmark blacktop should also be cautious.
"Please be careful. My concern is first with the safety of the people and if we have to shoot it, we will, just be safe in the area," Potter said.
She said equipment is being brought in to possibly sedate the animal and get it back on her property.
Potter has complained to local officials, including supervisors, about someone damaging her property, hurting animals, and letting them loose. She said this seems to be more of the same behavior.
"That was a 10-foot confined fence and this kangaroo is less than a year old. Someone cut the line and pushed some boards apart for this animal to escape," she said.
According to Iowa code, kangaroos are not generally listed as wild animals, but Potter said she has proper licensing and certification for the animals.
