Kemper, Smith advance to IGHSAU state meet

FORT MADISON – The same two girls that went to the IGHSAU state wrestling tournament representing the Fort Madison Lady Hounds wrestling team, will make the trip again after earning 2^nd place finishes at Friday’s Class 3A Regional qualifier in Cedar Rapids.
Junior Hailey Kemper and sophomore Mara Smith will both make the travel to the Xtreme Arena in Coralville starting Thursday morning. Wrestling starts at 10 a.m. on the 1^st and 2^nd with the morning session running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the evening session kicking off at 6 p.m.
Semifinals and wrestlebacks continue on Friday with a 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. morning session and a 6 p.m. session for the finals and the grand march. Brackets for the tournament will be released at noon on Sunday.
Kemper breezed through the bracket at 100 lbs scoring two pins after receiving two byes to start Friday's action at the Alliant PowerHouse Arena.
Kemper (25-4) then found herself against top-seeded Violet Diaz (26-1) out of Denver, Iowa. Diaz worked a quick take down from which Kemper escaped to trail 2-1, but Diaz would pile up eight more points in the first two periods for a 10-1 lead before getting the pin 19 seconds into the third period.
Sophomore Mara Smith took a similar path in the 125 lb. bracket. Smith receiving a bye and then recording a pin in the quarters before battling to a 2-1 decision over Marion freshman Josie Logan in the semis.
Neither wrestler scored a point through the first two periods, but Smith was able to get a takedown 22 seconds into the final period. She got a caution and then a warning for stalling with 29 seconds left in the match. Logan was able to escape just four seconds after the stalling warning for a point, but Smith was able to stave off any attack in the final moments to get the win.
In the championship match, Smith tangled with undefeated Jillian Worthen (24-0) from Union/LaPorte City. Worthen scored two points in each period with a takedown and two reversals to hold a 6-0 lead before she was able to get Smith’s shoulders to the mat halfway through the third period for the 125 lb title.
Chloe Sokolik (130 lbs.) and Sadie Brandon (155 lbs.) both capture 5th place in their brackets to help Fort Madison to an 8th-place finish overall with 114 points. East Buchanon won the team event with 232 points.
