He was born on October 15, 1928 in Ft. Madison to Edwin Kirk and Corrine Evelyn Lake Sloat. He worked in traffic management and purchasing at DuPont.  Created and managed the Formad Warehouses and also was the customer liaison for Sharkey Transportation. He was a past rodeo parade chairman, a member of the Knights of Columbus, the treasurer of the North Lee County Red Cross and Disaster Chairman and served on the Ft. Madison Economic Development Corporation and the Old Fort Madison.  After his father died he began his passion of historical writing.  He was a columnist for the Daily Democrat and also wrote two books that were published.  He greatly enjoyed his morning coffee with his McDonald’s coffee klatsch.  When he wasn’t working or volunteering Jerry took the time to enjoy boating, camping, traveling, canoeing, reading, walking around the farm, music and especially spending time with his beloved dogs.
