Lady Hounds win chilly Burlington Invite

Rump wins 800 and Brooks takes titles in shot put and discus

BURLINGTON – The Fort Madison Lady Hounds captured first place at the Burlington Invitational held Saturday after being postponed due to weather on Friday.
The ladies scored 113 points to outpace Cedar Rapids Prairie’s 90 and Burlington’s 87. Avery Rump helped Fort Madison to the title with a first-place finish in the open 800 at 2:27.34. The Hounds’ Sprint Medley and Distance Medley relay teams also captured titles on Saturday.
Charlie Huebner pulled up at 28.29 in the 200-meter dash, good enough for runner-up in that event. She also captured a 2nd in the long jump at 14’9.5”. The 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, and 4-800 relay teams from Fort Madison all captured a second-place finish. Madisyn Grifin finished the 400-meters at 1:14.14, good enough for runner-up. Alaina Schwerin took 2nd in the 400 hurdles at 1:22.83.
The Central Lee girls finished fourth overall with 55 points led by Allison Gruntmeir’s title in the 400-hurdles at 1:20.69. The Hawks' Distance Medley relay team also captured second at 5:15.34.
Fort Madison finished 3rd in the boys' meet with 94 points, four out of second behind Burlington, while the Hawks settled in at 4th with 58 points. Prairie won the event with 127 points.
Evan Fogarty and Brett Cook had titles for the Hawks. Fogarty ran an 11.98 in the 100, and Cook ran a 55.55 in the 400. Urijah Brooks won the shot put with a 47’9” throw and the discus with 143’0”.
Hunter Smrt was second in the high jump at 4’10” while the Hounds’  Henry Ireland was second in the 200 at 24.93. The 4x100 relay team also took runner-up honors, while Lucius Zimmerman was second in the 110 hurdles at 17.92.
Central Lee’s 4x400 was runner-up with a 3:52.64 and Austin Fogarty earned 2nd in the 400 hurdles at 1:00.18. Kain Arrowood took runner-up in the long jump at 18’8”.
The Hawks hosted the Hawk Relays on Monday night, results will be posted in Tuesday’s edition.
