WEST POINT - The afternoon thunderstorms gave way to a slightly cooler evening Thursday night in West Point as the annual Sweet Corn Festival got underway.
Volunteers got busy boiling and buttering free sweet corn for festival goers and the Iowa Pork Producers sponsored a pork loin dinner in the shelter house.
Sonny's Market prepped the pork loins that were then thrown onto a grilling smoker where they were cooked and then sliced by volunteers with the West Point Community Club and sold as dinners with sides and, of course, sweet corn.
Volunteers cooked 10 large picnic coolers full of the loins for the dinners .Friday's dinner will feature BBQ chicken.
Kara Lake was named the 2025 West Point Sweet Corn Festival queen while Harper Wendland, also of West Point, was crowned the festival princess.

Dance teams from Central Lee, Holy Trinity Catholic and Fort Madison entertained those in the grandstand bleachers lining the east side of the square following the pageants which were hosted by West Point Mayor Gary Peitz.
In the background carnival rides rang out, music played and someone called out BINGO.
In addition to Friday's BBQ chicken meals, the festival will again feature the best sweet corn boil in the tri-state area, vendors, and park activities, along with amusement rides through the end of the day.
On Saturday the annual 5K and 10K run will kick off events in the morning at 8 a.m. in front of the library. The day will also feature more chicken dinners, park events, a pee-wee drag race contest and junior water fights on the east side of the square.
Live entertainment takes over after regular festival entertainment.
On Sunday, the final day of the festival, The annual Sweet Corn parade will kick off at noon, followed by the mini-tractor pulls, a horseshoe tournament and all the remaining sweet corn.
