FORT MADISON - Fort Madison police are releasing details including an arrest in connection to a stabbing that took place earlier this month at a home in Fort Madison.
On February 8, officers from the Fort Madison Police Department were dispatched to the residence in the 3000 block of Avenue J in reference to a male being aggressive in the household. Upon arrival, the officers discovered Jacob Haage, 32, of Fort Madison, lying on the ground with multiple stab wounds.
According to the arrest affidavit from the Lee County Attorney's office and endorsed by Fort Madison Police Chief Cody Potthast, Haage was stabbed by a minor in the household who is alleged to have been defending his mother from an alleged assault taking place in the home by Haage. The affidavit indicated that Haage was attacking the woman in front of the child.
Haage has been arrested and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault impeding airway. No charges are expected against the minor at this time.

The affidavit alleges that Haage and the woman had been arguing in the home and Haage punched a wall, injuring his hand. The two went to the ER and, on the way home, Haage punched the woman in the face and got out of the car. She drove away from the scene and went back to the home where he arrived just after midnight and began breaking things in the home. The incident progressed to a choke hold.
The affidavit indicates the woman was able to get away and run to her son's bedroom where the assault continued on a bed, resulting in the child stabbing the man. The woman again got away and was chased down by Haage outside the home whereupon police arrived on the scene and arrested Haage.
A charge is merely an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The Fort Madison Police Department was the responding agency and is the lead investigative agency in this case. Haage will be prosecuted by the Lee County Attorney’s Office.
