LEE COUNTY – A Louisiana man traveling in a stolen vehicle out of that state is in custody Tuesday following a chase that involved multiple agencies.
According to Lee County Sheriff Elliott Vandenberg, Lee County deputies along with officers from the Missouri State Patrol, Iowa State Patrol, and Fort Madison Police pursued the man into Iowa from Missouri after a report was received about an active pursuit into Iowa.
Vandenberg said the man lost control of the vehicle and crashed south of the 1700 block of 320th Street and took off on foot. He said from there, the man tried at least three times to carjack a vehicle and was unsuccessful.
“Those were between where he crashed and 320th Street. We know of at least three separate instances of him trying to carjack someone. He almost got into one car that pulled over, but didn’t quite get in,” Vandenberg said.
The chase began just before 11:30 a.m. when the Lee County Sheriff's Office was contacted about the active vehicle pursuit entering Iowa. A few moments later about a man running with a firearm, and a subsequent report of shots fired.
Law enforcement found the suspect, whose name and age have yet to be released, hiding in a yard near 320th Street where he was taken into custody without incident.
Vandenberg said charges are being compiled out of the incident and the man is currently being held in Lee County Jail.
Montrose and Donnellson Police Departments, Jackson Township Fire, Des Moines Township Fire, Montrose Fire, Lee County EMS, Keokuk police, and LCSO K9 Kion also assisted in the incident.
