FORT MADISON - Regional historian Dave Moehn will be recounting the tale of an historic local relic - the Alleman Bell - at a program on April 26 in Fort Madison.
This bell started its story as the signal bell on the Steamboat Osprey which became well-known on the Upper Mississippi River in the 1840s. Learn about the close relationship which the Osprey and its captain had with the Prophet Joseph Smith and the early Mormon Church in Nauvoo. Hear about what life on an early riverboat was like.
The bell’s journey continues when it is given to pioneer local Catholic Priest John G. Alleman and as property of the Catholic Church for the next 180 years. It becomes a witness to and participant in Fort Madison’s history.
The event will take place Sunday, April 26, at McAleer Hall, 415th 11th Street in Fort Madison. Doors open at 6 pm. Sandwiches and sides will be provided. The presentation will begin at 7 pm and the public is welcome.
