Former mayor to seek 100th District State Representative seat

LEE COUNTY – The Eppers-O’Malley dinner held annually in Keokuk revealed a couple local candidates who are going to seek election in 2026 on Democratic tickets.
Current, and outgoing Fort Madison Mayor Matt Mohrfeld will be running for 100th district state representative, a seat currently held by Blaine Watkins of Donnellson.
Watkins won in a run-off against Fort Madison businesswoman Nannette Griffin in March.
Mohrfeld served three terms as Fort Madison’s mayor and will be stepping aside after this year. He will be replaced by former city clerk Melinda Blind.
Mohrfeld is running to give Lee County and southeast Iowa a stronger voice in Des Moines.
“Southeast Iowa deserves a stronger, steady voice in Des Moines,” Mohrfeld said. “I’ve spent my life working with people to solve real problems — from balancing budgets to building projects that last. I want to bring that same common-sense, hometown leadership to the Statehouse.”
A runner, motorcyclist, and advocate for healthy living, Mohrfeld believes that strong communities begin with healthy, hopeful people. He and his wife, Beth, have built a family and a business rooted in faith, hard work, and service.
“This campaign is about keeping Southeast Iowa strong — growing our towns, supporting our families, and ensuring our voice is heard,” Mohrfeld said.
Mohrfeld also served two terms as a Lee County Supervisor, and his total elected duties ushered in the renovation of the Fort Madison Marina, improved streets, and health and wellness infrastructure.
Former Fort Madison city councilman Chris Greenwald told the gathering of Lee County’s Democrats that he will be running for Lee County Supervisor. He will challenge Tim Wondra for the District 2 seat.
The Eppers-O’Malley Dinner is the annual meeting of Lee County Democrats and was held at Meyers Courtyard in downtown Keokuk.
